Motion Graphics and VFX
From 2002-2015 I worked as an animator, designer, and art director in the motion graphics and VFX industries, working with both my own clients and design and visual effects studios. Most notably I worked for 3 years as a director at the Mill in New York, leading animation projects and directing live-action commercials. Below are a few of my favorite projects.
Additional work can be seen at Poly&Pixel.
Clockwork Atlas and the Weight of Time
In the fall of 2014 I was commissioned to create a video mural for Viacom’s new Times Square lobby video wall. The mural is a patchwork of short looping vignettes inspired by deco murals of midtown Manhattan. Figures from Greek mythology struggle endlessly to propel the machines of modern life, a tireless game of cosmic volleyball turns the gears of a factory, and an alien ship mines isocohedrons from the steppes of snow capped peaks, while cybernetic jellyfish, unaware of their impending doom, circle the waters below.
NASA Planetarium Shows
In 2015 I directed two high-resolution full-dome planetarium shows for NASA while working at the San Francisco studio Obscura Digital. I was the primary designer (in addition to contributing a significant portion of the CG work), and worked with a team of 3D artists to create two 15-minute shows on an extremely compressed schedule. I worked closely with stakeholders at NASA to ensure that we accurately represented the science, and developed a system in VR to allow us to see the project in a virtual planetarium without having to rely on projection.
Fiat Lux
While at Obscura Digital I art directed and edited a 12-minute segment of the first projection mapping project on St. Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican. The project was part of a larger series of projections aimed at bringing attention to environmental issues and was presented as a gift to Pope Francis to celebrate the opening of the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy.
Adult Swim: Dumb and Dumber To
For centuries the Order of Dumb and Dumber has worshiped the idiocy of Lloyd and Harry. We were tasked with translating the glory of their comedy into an epic stained glass window to help promote the long awaited sequel for Adult Swim.
I directed this spot for Adult Swim, working with an illustrator to translate the story of Lloyd and Harry into beautiful stained glass. I took this illustration and created a CG scene for this spot.
Pantech Skate Phone
While at The Mill in New York in 2013 I directed this commercial for a new phone. To show off the phone’s versatility we posed it in various sports environments, making it skate, surf, and snowboard through a stylized world. To create this motion we made an edit of real sports moves and matched the animation to those references. In addition to directing the spot I contributed significantly to the production, leading a team of over 20 talented artists to produce this spot in less than two weeks.
Nike: Yellow Snow
In 2008 I spent six weeks in lovely Portland, OR, leading the production of this whimsical and psychedelic music video announcing Nike’s first snowboard boot. All the art in the video is directly from the beautiful art on the boot created by artist Arbito. I led a team of two other animators.
